Recently, Globe Telecom’s GCASH launched a new donation drive to support a local well-known children’s charity called Bantay Bata. According to Paolo Baltao, president of GCASH operator G-Xchange Inc. (GXI), “GCASH subscribers can donate any amount, even as low as one peso, and it will definitely go a long way. No need to go to a bank to deposit the donations.”
Today, GXI sent out the following message to all GCASH subscribers via SMS:
FREE GCASH Advisory: Give children a better future! Using your mobile phone, donate at least P10 GCASH to Bantay Bata via GCASH Mobile App or dial *143#. As a way of saying thank you, each P10 donation is equivalent to 1 raffle entry and a chance to be one of the 12 lucky winners of Samsung Galaxy Note 2. Promo is from 04/26/13 to 06/26/13. The combination of a well known charity along with a raffle opportunity to win a large-size smartphone like the Galaxy Note 2 was enough to encourage Donna and Nora to donate to Bantay Bata.
The nice thing about providing the option to donate via mobile money in any amount, even as small as P1 ($0.025), is that it provides an excellent real-life use case. Adding the raffle opportunity for contributions as small as P10 ($0.25) is also a great incentive which should promote this donation drive via mobile money. Congratulations to both GCASH and Bantay Bata for this interesting partnership that is a win-win situation for both.
Apart from Bantay Bata, I have also made mobile money-enabled donations in the past and seen other Filipinos doing the same during times of crises. I usually donate during times of natural disasters to the Philippine Red Cross and find that it is often easier to do this via mobile money.
It will be interesting to track how well the Bantay Bata – GCASH donation campaign works over the next two months and I hope GXI will share the results at the end of June. Stay tuned for an update at that time.
